Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little new information.
